Would you like your stationary to have an identity that isn’t mass produced? If, then here is Saishraddha Malage (Sai) with her very innovative book jackets in denim! In fact, so delighted were we with how how the jackets look that we at ArtUmbrella couldn’t resist creating a video on the same.
Sai’s Denim Theory:
Sai comes from a family that collects the obvious like stamps and coins to the most random – buttons, seeds, plastic wrappers and bags. She reveals she has been brought up on the belief that everything can be used for something. Greatly encouraged her family, recycling the old and discarded into a useful product, is something Sai has indulged in ever since she was little. “To be honest, I find it hard to walk into a shop and pick up things, especially craft materials as I’m much better off with things lying around,” confesses the young designer. In the past, Sai has made a bag out of an old pair of denim pants using its pockets as part of the design. Unfortunately, the wallet made of the same pair later got stolen. But, this exercise proved fruitful as the items stayed on for a long time.
To her, denim is durable, flexible, washable, and tough besides it has great texture too. She observes that denim trousers have parts that are super-worn-out and others that look almost untouched. As a firm believer of reincarnation, she chose to breathe new life into a few pairs. Sai says, “I had set aside a couple of denim pants when Anusha (former ArtUmbrella partner) brought the concept of Denim Theory, and I thought about denim book jackets!”
